Upcoming expansions of the network
City of Oulu is expanding the panOULU network with 400 access points by the end of year 2007. Also the University of Oulu is expanding the network with about 100 access points. Local companies may expand the network by getting a commercial panOULU subscription in their premises. From this page you can find information concerning the expansion process. This information is not however very accurate nor certain, because these are mostly preliminary plans.
Please do not ask us when some particular access point will be installed - we do not know the schedule and can't say anything exactly because of the complexity of the whole process.
Indoor coverage
On this page the term indoor coverage refers to those access points that have antennas placed indoors and thus are usable only in these buildings. In some cases an indoor access point may be used outside of the building, for example if the antenna is placed near a window or next to a thin wall.
Community houses
The City of Oulu is planning to install panOULU access points to all community houses in the Oulu region. The main idea in installing access points is to be near citizens (but not in their homes), and this way using panOULU would be easy also near their homes.
Youth houses
Youth houses are another public place where the city wants to locate its access points. A part of the youth houses already have an access points, and it planned that the rest will get theirs also.
Branch libraries
As the main library already has an extensive panOULU coverage, attention is now placed on branch libraries. Each of these will get an access point in the future.
Health centres
Health centres have many potential panOULU users, so the city is installing access points to them also.
Service centres
Some of the service centres are planned to receive an access point.
Exercise halls
Some of the exercise halls in Oulu are to receive some indoor coverage. In some places, such as Ouluhalli and the ice hall, there is already an extensive coverage.
Schools
At some point there will be indoor coverage in the city's schools. At first it is planned that access points are installed in mobile learning environmnet schools and a couple of other schools. The rest of the schools will be planned in a later stage.
The University
The KampusWLAN network, located in the University of Oulu will be expanded by about a hundred access points to the premises of departments. This way most of the Linnanmaa campus area is covered, and also some of the Kontinkangas and Kajaani campuses.
Outdoor coverage
Outdoor coverage means that the antenna connected to the access point is located outdoors and the main usage of the access point happens outside. The access point is however usually located inside. Some outdoor access points can be used indoors, especially if the antenna is in visual range.
Community houses
The community houses of Höyhtyä, Keskusta and Tuira are possibly getting an outdoor access point - this is not however very certain.
Youth houses
There are plans to install outdoor coverage to the youth houses of Kaukovainio and Myllyoja.
Exercise centres
The City of Oulu exercise centres are getting some outdoor coverage in the future, if it is possible to place the access points in warm buildings. Especially Raksila and Raatti centres are planned to get an extensive outdoor coverage.
Nallikari
There are plans to increase the outdoor coverage in Nallikari camping centre. It is unlikely that panOULU is usable at the Nallikari beach, because trees weaken the signal quite a lot. Covering the beach will be investigated, but because buildings are few and far apart, it is very difficult to get a decent signal to the beach.
Tuira beach
Installing an access point to Tuira beach has been preliminarily discussed. The fate of this access point is by no means very certain, as the city has no connections to the beach.
Centre area
The outdoor coverage in the city centre is planned to be expanded towards the Raksila exercise centre to create an united coverage area. This work is still very much in progress, so nothing certain can be said at this time.
The university
Plans indicate that in the future there will be outdoor coverage near the University (quad and parking places mostly).
