Usage of the network
In order to use the panOULU network you need a WLAN (IEEE 802.11) compatible computer, PDA or phone.
At the beginning of a browsing session you are redirected to an opening page. There you may find current information about panOULU.
No user account is needed to use the panOULU network.
Using the panOULU network is free.
Network settings
Network name (SSID): panoulu
DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol): enabled
Services
Private class IP addresses are given out to users with the help of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
In the panOULU network you can use all Internet services, which operate regardless of NAT (Network Address Translation).
Sending e-mail is possible by using outgoing e-mail server mail.panoulu.net.
IRC conversations are possible by using the IRC server irc.oulu.net on port 6667. More information about IRC (in Finnish)

Security
The wireless connection provided by the panOULU network is unprotected. You can obtain a secure connection by using SSH (Secure Shell) or VPN (Virtual Private Network). Please make sure that the security features of your computer are up to date. You can find more information from the University of Oulu data security pages (in Finnish).
