2008-12-02 - Advertisements experimented on panOULU network

City of Oulu will experiment the use of advertising as a revenue source to pay for the maintenance of the free wireless network panOULU. During the testing period users of the city part of the network will receive advertisements in their browser windows. The network will remain free for all users. Read more (in Finnish).

2008-11-07 - panOULU celebrated fifth birthday with a new usage record

On 15.10.2008 exactly five years had passed since the founding of the panOULU network, i.e. the signing of the panOULU cooperation agreement. Over the five years panOULU has developed into a unique concept even in the worldwide setting. panOULU celebrated its special day with a new usage record in October 2008.

2008-10-31 - Oulu opens up a free MobileWiMAX network

City of Oulu in co-operation with companies and public organizations is building a wireless broadband network based on MobileWiMAX technology to Oulu region. The new network expands the current wireless technology development and testing platform consisting of panOULU and Octopus Networks to a unique ensemble even in the global scale. At the same time the Internet connection already provided by the free and open panOULU network will be offered to citizens and visitors in a larger scale in selected places and service points. There will be two major maintenance breaks in panOULU network during April. These are due some changes in power input and upgrading to new cooling system. First break will be in 12.-13.4 and another in 26.-27-4.
2008-04-03 - Technopolis and Pulmonary Association Heli to join panOULU

panOULU network has been incorporated to Technopolis plc. and Pulmonary association Heli facilities in Oulu. It is now possible for guests and customers to use Finland's largest open and free wireless network in these places. Some of the access points didn't survive the power blackout in 3.10.2007 and are offline. Power supplies need to be switched. We try to get the access points online as soon as possible.

On Monday, the 1st of October 2007, there will be a panOULU maintenance break starting at 4 p.m. During the break a core switch will be changed. The break ends on Monday evening at 6 p.m.
2007-08-15 - panOULU expansion continues

The expansions of panOULU, a free and open wireless broadband network, continue this autumn by City of Oulu's COMPETENCE Oulu 400 programme. The goal is to install altogether 400 new access points before the end of 2007. On the 10th of August a milestone of 300 installed access points was accomplished. 2007-07-02 - panOULU summer competition raised interest

The panOULU summer competition, organised by City of Oulu COMPETENCE Oulu 400 programme and panOULU consortium, was participated by 1 371 people on the week after midsummer's day. The competition was a part of a campaign designed to make panOULU network better known during this summer. Campaign's goal is to help citizens of Oulu and visitors alike to find the network and to utilise it. A Nokia N95 wlan phone, donated by Elisa Plc. was raffled with the participants of the competition. The lucky winner is Jarkko Lysti from Oulu.

2007-05-31 - panOULU expands to Ylikiiminki

The wireless panOULU network is now working also in Ylikiiminki. The network can be used free of charge with a WLAN capable wireless device in Ylikiiminki centrum, library, health care center, Harjurinne school and the town hall, which also includes the youth house.

The expansion of the panOULU network reached an important milestone, as Oulun Puhelin Plc. delivered the panOULU subscription purchased by Finavia to Oulu Airport last Friday. panOULU offers all passengers at the airport open and free wireless broadband Internet access that can be used with WLAN compatible device. 2007-03-26 - Network problems at the City Hospital

The fiber optic cable to the Oulu City Hospital, which carries also panOULU traffic, has been broken on Monday, the 26th March 2007. Due to this problem the hospital's wireless panOULU network is not working. The problem is being fixed. Edit 14.35: City hospital's network is now functioning.
2007-02-27 - Finland's first large-scale wireless MESH network to Oulu

City of Oulu expands panOULU network to the city center and other outdoor areas with a MESH network. For the users of panOULU the shake-up is substantial - wireless connection works faster and is more reliable, and at the same time the coverage area expands significantly. The network uses Strix Systems MESH technology and it will be delivered by Nordic LAN&WAN Communication Plc.

2007-02-21 - Wireless networking on the Hailuoto ferry and ferry harbours

It is now possible to use the free and open wireless panOULU network on the Hailuoto ferry and in both Hailuoto and Oulunsalo ferry harbours. The joint pilot of Destia (previously Tieliikelaitos), Digita Ltd., City of Oulu and the municipalities of Hailuoto and Oulunsalo is meant to find out the added value of a wireless network for the users of the ferry. During the pilot the network will also break the municipality borders by expanding outside Oulu.

2007-01-15 - Wireless networking in buses

PanOULU, the open and free wireless network, can now be used in local buses and in the library bus through Digita @450 wireless broadband service. The bus companies V. Alamäki and Koskilinjat, City of Oulu, Digita Plc. and Buscom Plc. are piloting new Flash-OFDM technology, which allows panOULU to be used in moving vehicles, for three months. The decision to continue this project will be made later in the spring, after user experiences have been collected by the end of March. 2007-01-03 - Port 25 (SMTP) to be blocked on 2007-1-15

On Monday, the 15th of January 2007, the port for SMTP connections (25) outwards of panOULU network will be blocked because of increase in unsolicited commercial e-mail (spam). This means that it is not possible to use outside SMTP servers which use port 25 from panOULU. E-mail can still be sent through panOULU SMTP server mail.panoulu.net.
2007-01-02 - Over 500 access points in the panOULU network

The 500th access point was installed to panOULU network on Friday, the 22nd December 2006. It is located at the university in room HU206. In addition the network usage statistics for the year 2006 are ready.
2006-12-21 - panOULU rewarded at JulkIT Awards competition

panOULU, SparkNet Phonet and Katso project were rewarded at this year's JulkIT Awards competition, while VeTuMa service won it. The competition searched for a public administration joint project which has improved processes, renewed operation models and is technically functioning and easy to use. 2006-12-14 - Breaks in network from 16th to 18th Dec 2006

Oulu Information Technology will be doing electric input maintenance in its server hall, and because of this also panOULU servers will be shut down on Saturday the 16th of December 2006 at 4 PM. The servers will be back online at the latest on the following Monday. During this time panOULU website, e-mail and other user services will not work. The network traffic will be routed to the Internet through a backup server.
2006-11-21 - IRC and news servers back in use

IRC server irc.oulu.net on port 6667 is again accepting connections from panOULU users now that the mysterious name server problems have been fixed. Also the news server news.oulu.net allows connections from panOULU, so reading newsgroups is now possible.

There will be an administrative break in panOULU network starting on 5.10.2006 in the evening and ending on 6.10.2006 in the afternoon. During the break all network services will be transferred to new servers. The break may cause slowness and small pauses in the network usage towards the Internet.

The problems in panOULU network have been pinned down to a faulty software in some of the equipment. Updating the network devices to the newest software version is almost finished, so those access points that are still offline should become online soon.
