2007-02-21 - Wireless networking on the Hailuoto ferry and ferry harbours

It is now possible to use the free and open wireless panOULU network on the Hailuoto ferry and in both Hailuoto and Oulunsalo ferry harbours. The joint pilot of Destia (previously Tieliikelaitos), Digita Ltd., City of Oulu and the municipalities of Hailuoto and Oulunsalo is meant to find out the added value of a wireless network for the users of the ferry. During the pilot the network will also break the municipality borders by expanding outside Oulu.

During the ferry pilot the municipalities of Hailuoto and Oulunsalo take the first steps of panOULU regional co-operation. panOULU network is gradually expanding outside the borders of Oulu, and access points will be installed during the spring to the centrum of Ylikiiminki municipality, which will be joined to Oulu in the beginning of 2009.

During the pilot, which will last to the end of March, it is possible to utilize the waiting period on the ferry harbour and also the 25 minutes on the ferry for example by reading e-mails on a WLAN compatible laptop or a mobile phone. The WLAN access points located in the ferry harbours and on the ferry access the Internet by using Digita's new @450 broadband wireless network. During the pilot Destia will also find out whether the @450 broadband network is useful in their own use. The decision concerning the continuation of the service will be made during the spring.
