After long work the new panOULU website has been published. Research projects WSN ("Wireless Sensor Network" and Bluetooth now belong under panOULU brand, and have their own subsites.
The site is built on top of Drupal, and has features like realtime access point search. In the future we aim to improve statistics and those features.
Speed of panOULU internet uplink was increased from 100 Mbps to 300 Mbps during the maintenance break. New speeds should be sufficient for near future.
panOULUseutu link was also upgraded, from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps.
Internet protocol version 6 is available in panOULU-network again. Most of the network has been configured for IPv6. PanOULUseutu and mesh-network will follow soon.
IP-protocol is used to route packets in the Internet. IPv6 will supplement and at some point replace currently used IPv4.
PanOULU-network currently supports stateless IPv6 autoconfiguration. IPv6-addresses used in panOULU are public.
panOULU Conqueror, a computer game developed by the MediaTeam Oulu research group in University of Oulu, Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, conquers the access points of panOULU network during a four-week-long tournament. The tournamet begins on Monday, September 7 2009 at 00.00 and ends on Sunday, October 4th at 23.59.59. The tournament is open to all interested parties and the team that gains the most points during the tournament will be rewarded.panOULU Conqueror is a new kind of a location-based multiplayer game. The players have a simple goal: they form teams of at most six players and connect to the panOULU network with a WLAN capable device. The players attack and conquer access points from their rivals to gain points - whoever controls the access point at midnight, gets all the points for that day. The more users the access point has, the more point it gives to its controller. The situation can change rapidly: if team members forget to visit their access points daily, their point total will diminish.
The game will be opened on Tuesday, September 1st for testing purposes, so that everyone has a chance to try the game before the tournament. All points gained before 2009-09-07 will however be nullified before the tournament. The tournament will not affect the panOULU network in any way.
Get ready to conquer the world!

Expanding of the panOULU network to cover Oulunseutu region is progressing as planned. Now, panOULU network expands to Liminka. The expanding process has required years of experience of wireless technologies used in panOULU. The new solutions are tested in Liminka during June and July. The first access points are up and running and rest of the installations will be ready in the end of June. The panOULU network is available to citizens during the test in areas covered with network. There might be some interrupts during the test period. After the test period the installation work is continued in other towns. The expanding is completed in the end of October.
The panOULU network offers an open internet access to citizens free of charge. The use of panOULU does not require used IDs or registration. At the moment, panOULU network includes 1100 wlan access points used by around 16000 different users per month.
The expanding of panOULU network is a collaboration project (panOULUseutu) with the cities and towns around Oulu. The purpose of the project is to add over 200 new access points and expand the panOULU area to cover also other cities. The project is sub part of the TAITO program funded by European Union (EAKR).
