A scientific article addressing the technical implementation of the panOULU network was published in the ACCESSNETS 2008 conference in Las Vegas, the USA.

The article "Supporting session and access point mobility in a large multi-provider multi-vendor municipal WiFi network" written by Timo Ojala, Toni Hakanen, Ossi Salmi, Mikko Kenttälä and Juha Tiensyrjä, and presented in the conference by Toni Hakanen focuses on the L2 core topology of the panOULU network. It aggregates the WLAN zones provided by the members of the panOULU consortium into a large network, whose access points belong to the same IP subnet. The benefits of this simple design include built-in mobility support, whose importance and performance is evaluated in the article.
