3000 eur grant for a M.Sc. thesis on web banner advertising

MediaTeam Oulu research group at the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering of the University of Oulu solicits applications for a 3000 eur M.Sc. thesis grant.The thesis research focuses on the web banner advertising pilot conducted in a part of the panOULU network in 1.1.-30.6.2009. The thesis should study the impact of the web banner advertising on browsing experience and the validity of the business model used in the pilot. A general description of the pilot can be found here. The thesis research should be started as soon as possible.
The written application has to include a cover letter, CV, photocopies of earlier degree diplomas and up-to-date study transcript. The application has to be sent by 15.1.2009 to address:

Advertisements experimented on panOULU network

City of Oulu will experiment the use of advertising as a revenue source to pay for the maintenance of the free wireless network panOULU. During the testing period users of the city part of the network will receive advertisements in their browser windows. The network will remain free for all users. Read more (in Finnish).


panOULU celebrated fifth birthday with a new usage record

On 15.10.2008 exactly five years had passed since the founding of the panOULU network, i.e. the signing of the panOULU cooperation agreement. Over the five years panOULU has developed into a unique concept even in the worldwide setting. panOULU celebrated its special day with a new usage record in October 2008.


Oulu opens up a free MobileWiMAX network

City of Oulu in co-operation with companies and public organizations is building a wireless broadband network based on MobileWiMAX technology to Oulu region. The new network expands the current wireless technology development and testing platform consisting of panOULU and Octopus Networks to a unique ensemble even in the global scale. At the same time the Internet connection already provided by the free and open panOULU network will be offered to citizens and visitors in a larger scale in selected places and service points. panOULU at ACCESSNETS 2008 conference in Las Vegas

A scientific article addressing the technical implementation of the panOULU network was published in the ACCESSNETS 2008 conference in Las Vegas, the USA.The article "Supporting session and access point mobility in a large multi-provider multi-vendor municipal WiFi network" written by Timo Ojala, Toni Hakanen, Ossi Salmi, Mikko Kenttälä and Juha Tiensyrjä, and presented in the conference by Toni Hakanen focuses on the L2 core topology of the panOULU network. It aggregates the WLAN zones provided by the members of the panOULU consortium into a large network, whose access points belong to the same IP subnet. The benefits of this simple design include built-in mobility support, whose importance and performance is evaluated in the article.


panOULU keynote in Toronto

A talk on the panOULU network is one of the keynotes in the 2nd Annual Municipal Wireless Summite conference, which is held on 31.1.-1.2.2008 in Toronto.The keynote "panOULU - Wireless City Project in Oulu, Finland" given by Heikki Riikonen and Timo Ojala focused on the City of Oulu's role in provisioning the panOULU network, the technical implementation of the network and the usage statistics and experiences of the network.


panOULU expansion continues

The expansions of panOULU, a free and open wireless broadband network, continue this autumn by City of Oulu's COMPETENCE Oulu 400 programme. The goal is to install altogether 400 new access points before the end of 2007. On the 10th of August a milestone of 300 installed access points was accomplished.
